Dental X-rays: should we be concerned?

Recently, due to the numerous articles and studies published on the topic, dental X-rays have become a concern for many patients, who often bring these questions to their dentists.

Are the radiation levels from dental X-rays dangerous?
But what exactly are we talking about?

Dental X-rays (panoramic X-rays, CT scans, dental scans, etc.) are an extremely valuable tool for detecting all conditions affecting the teeth, gums, and the entire oral structure.

Without them, it would be impossible to identify oral health issues early—especially problems that are not visible through a simple clinical examination.

Mario Aimetti, delegated representative of the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology (SIDP), and its president during 2018–2019, stated:

“Dental X-rays are an essential tool for maintaining oral health.”

So, should we really be afraid of radiation when getting a CT scan at the dentist?

As with everything, moderation is key, and it is important to consult your dentist properly.

It is advisable to limit exposure to X-rays by having radiographs only when strictly necessary, or when the procedure can bring a tangible benefit to the patient.

At Sorridi alla Vita, to meet the needs of our patients, we provide the best equipment and technology, allowing us to perform low-radiation CT scans directly in our clinic, specifically the Cone Beam CT.

Some of the many advantages of this equipment compared to a traditional CT scan include:

  • Lower radiation exposure compared to other dental imaging methods.

  • Better three-dimensional image resolution, more precise and distortion-free.

  • Ability to reconstruct both dental arches in a single scan, without additional exams or costs.

  • No waiting time: the CT scan results are available immediately, saving our patients valuable time.
